Postgraduate Courses

We offer a wide range of high quality teaching and extra-curricular activities.

New Generation Universities “do different things” to span the main focus areas of teaching and learning, research and community service, under a broader, integrated focus of serving society and, more particularly, their immediate communities. (Louw, 2008)

At the Vaal University of Technology, VUT Research offers a number of postgraduate courses to students who want to further their studies, and who want intellectual cultivation, character growth and personal development. We offer both Masters Degrees and Doctorate studies within four faculties in South Africa.

At VUT Research we offer a Postgraduate Induction Programme for all our new or first-year postgraduate students. The objective of this programme is to ensure that all postgraduate students in the Faculty of Management Sciences receive optimal support in their journey from the initiation until the completion of their studies. The programme requires regular and productive attendance as much of the information on how to prepare an acceptable proposal is only available in class. Any student having less than 70% attendance at the programme will not receive any further support from the Faculty and the Postgraduate Office. Thus, a supervisor will not be appointed to assist you in your studies.

VUT Research’s Faculties

Faculty Applied & Computer Sciences

The Science Faculty is comprised of excellent departments that are large and diverse and which are amongst the best in South Africa.

Faculty Engineering & Technology

The Engineering Faculty programmes are fully accredited and make use of state-of-the-art technology and a collection of specialisations.

Faculty Human Sciences

The Faculty of Human Sciences offers postgraduate courses to students who are seeking to extend their humanities studies
and specialize in a chosen field.

Faculty Management Sciences

The Faculty of Management Sciences offers courses for postgraduate students that focus on developing leadership skills that are needed in the corporate field.

While the task may seem a daunting one, students can feel assured that they have the full support of and assistance of the professional supervisor for their course, as well as the support of the faculty at large. With this excellent support structure in place, students at the Vaal University of Technology may choose to specialize within their field of study, or may decide to change to a field of study that they have not served in before. Ultimately the student will explore new academic boundaries through conducting new research, expanding on existing research or conducting new methods of research and testing.

VUT Research’s Submission & Extension Guidelines

The postgraduate courses that are offered at VUT are emphasized by the intense levels of research they require in order to be completed on time and at a high standard. Postgraduate research requires strict time management skills on part of the student as there are many hours involved in gathering information, evaluating the data and then reporting back on it. Postgraduate research also needs to be done by a student who is independent and who has the drive to complete this incredibly formidable task they have set for themselves. We believe that a postgraduate degree shows a student’s dedication to a particular field, and also shows their discipline in working hard and their knowledge of a particular subject. These courses require the utmost perseverance and commitment from the students if they are to complete the course within the required time. The minimum required time to complete the course will be one year and the maximum time will be 4 years for Masters and 5 years for Doctorate studies. A student has to register each year for the duration of study of the Higher Degree.
